We celebrated a successful week and a half of school with a small picnic at the Farmette. We had a sign made for the Farmers Market and presented it to Mike and Betsy, and toasted our little slice of farm life. The sheep were a little imposed upon to have us all dining in their yard, but in our efforts to get them used to us, they just had to deal. Luthien got quite bossy with Sister and Jayda, but they all settled down after they found refuge hiding behind the wood pile. Sister and Jayda were the bravest, and kept a close eye on us.
They all finally took a literal leap of faith and made a break for the main pasture. The original sheep leaped a lot more and just watching them do that gave us all joy-it was such a pure expression of freedom. Sister and Jayda leap occasionally, but Luthien and Angel are just too darn fat or fluffy for much leaping.
We were curious about the difference in the way the new sheep look and Sam told us that they are from different lines of Churros. Also Sister had been rescued from starvation so she will likely never get as plump as Angel and Luthien.
This morning I went over to let them out for their day of grazing. I grabbed handfulls of grass and after a time Sister came and ate it out of my hands. Luthien thought about it, but declined. We enjoyed lots of eye contact. In ways she reminds me of Tamar-it's those horns, but when Tamar looked at you, you had to wonder if she was going to butt you. She never did. I don't get that look from Luthien, but of course she has been doing a lot of butting of Sister and Jayda. We'll have to keep an eye on that one!

Hey Karen!! You are so pastoral! I really like the picture of the sheep. I'm hoping that you weren't eating gyros or roast mutton samiches!!
